In Memory of Jim Rohn
By Sandy Sommer RKC on in Sandy's Journal
“If you learn to set a good sail, the wind that blows will always take you to the dreams you want, the income you want, and the treasures of mind, purse, and soul you want.” — Jim Rohn
Jim Rohn, one of the great business philsophers has just died. If you don’t know who Mr. Rohn was or haven’t been exposed to him than I suggest you may want to check him out.
I was living in Arizona in 1996, working for Results Seminars, and mainly Tom Hopkins, when I was first exposed to Jim. We represented him for a few speaking engagements and I read his books and listened to his tapes. Some of what he wrote and said may have seemed corny at the time but the more I listened and read the more it all made sense. As Einstein once said, “Make it as simple as possible and no simpler.”
Everything Jim wrote resonated with me and still does. Not a day goes by where I don’t read from “Leading An Inspired Life.” Or listen to something along the lines of the “Power Of Ambition.”
It’s simply wonderful stuff. Nothing I know about goal setting isn’t from him. The way I try to take responsibility for my actions….Jim Rohn….The way I treat people…Jim again.
Other than my family I don’t think any one person has had such an impact in my life.
I last saw Jim Rohn in Dallas in 2007. We went to Texas to see him. I had just lost my job with a major financial instution and I almost cancelled our trip. Thank goodness I didn’t. The new stuff I learned during that Leadership weekend and the old things that were reenforced then are the essential tools that helped position me to serve my fitness community. I dare say no RKC for me without the teachings of Jim. Certainly, this blog wouldn’t exist. Nor would my desire to help as any people as I can.
If you don’t know who Mr. Rohn was, then please ‘google’ him. Go to Nightingale Conant and invest in yourself. Please leave a comment about a particular area of interest and I’ll be happy to make the appropriate recommendation.
Let me close with this Jim Rohn Quote:
“When you sow, the birds are always going to get some of the seed. It’s inevitable. You may feel the urge to chase them away, but don’t give into it. Concentrate on your task. Stay in the field.”
From those of us who’ve ever thought of throwing in the towel…I thank you with all my heart.
PS Please share a favorite Rohn quote or story in the “Comments.”

Sandy.
I have only learned of you and your blog in the past 2 weeks. You have shared with me information about Primal eating and I am so intrigued. More than that, I’m ready to make some radical changes in my diet and lifestyle. But I confess that I think of personal trainers as guys who are only into working out and not real brainy. Reading this post about Jim Rohn changed my thinking about YOU!! My “to do” list today includes ordering some books you told me about. Now I’m adding to the list!!! I’m glad you are a well-rounded person and not just a fitness junkie!!!

Dear Debi,
I appreciate your kind words. Fitness to me is just part of life’s journey. I try to be as healthy in mind as in body. I can assure you that it isn’t always easy and I certainly make more than my share of missteps. I think my natural curiosity is what makes me so hungry to learn and share. Sometimes I need to govern my tendency to be “preachy.”
Train with purpose,
