How Much Does Belief Impact Results?

I think a whole lot. Let me first say that all evidence presented here is anecdotal in nature. I am writing about my experience and the experience of those I’ve been lucky enough to work with.

If I give you guidance and you buy into it, then you are lot more likely to get results. If you want to argue and fight about it, then your buy-in is no go0d and your results will reflect that.

I don’t care what we are talking about here. Life, training, business or all of these things.

A 5 x 5 training program will get you a ton stronger.  If you don’t buy into it, then your results will be crappy.  How do I know this? I’ve seen it with certain clients. Both ways. When the belief is in place the results speak for themselves.

I was talking to my good friend Dan Cenidoza about this last week. There are many, many ways to enjoy success in training. Gym Movement works for some people. I can’t argue with that. Dan John’s methods have been proven over and over. Certainly, Marty Gallagher seems to get results. Countless world records performed by his athletes indicate he knows of what he speaks. Does Pavel have knowledge to share? What do you think?

And that question may prove to be the most telling one.

If you don’t believe in your approach, then I can promise you that you won’t get results. I don’t care what others are able to do with the same program. It doesn’t matter. What matters is what you think. Why is this? Because the mind is such a powerful thing.

    Sandy,

Great thoughts on this topic, and I totally agree. Thanks for letting me mull this over.

Thank you Lauren. Belief or non belief is very powerful. I hope that what I write helps folks from time to time.

Completely agree – the power of the mind is enormous. We see this all the time in our office. The most classic example in medicine is the placebo. A study recently came out that said that over 1/2 of all German doctors regularly prescribe placebos because they work so well (probably saves people from a lot of side effects). There was also some research on placebos that said the more expensive they were, the more people believed that they worked. Fascinating stuff.

    Dear Dr. Julie,

It is interesting isn’t it? It’s like the old quote, “If you think you can or you think you can’t, then you are right.”

The mind truly is the ultimate gatekeeper. It seems to control all progress, and everything about the results you get. If you believe that your training is working, then you’re at least 50% of the way there :)

Exactly Jake. I think most people are completely hamstrung by their own limited beliefs. Myself included:)

I under took an exercise regime with a big number of pushups, even some yoga, man I toasted my abs and they’ve been aching. Unbelievable. In the past, one does something but goes at their own pace. Ouch!

Yet, I read in the Naked Warrior and it seems they often say be well rested and comfortable in doing exercises and not to over due it while of course, you can hear others say to exercise till fail.

    Thanks Sandy.

    Dear Tom,

I am really comfortable recommending the Grease the Groove methodology that Pavel shares in the NW. I think it makes a lot of sense and gives you a chance to treat getting stronger as the skill it is.

Funny you posted this today. I think this is my biggest barrier to progress with my pull-up and my physique.

Same thing with my deadlift, although I seem to have made a breakthrough!
